They're Repeating in America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding about him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king arising; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message is about love for others, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his crime policy states that when someone steals your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.

The evident and direct fact that Christ in biblical accounts requests a kind of radical love centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Finest Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or not?

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the best about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative about the nation and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both modesty and belief, a blend that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
