The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
