Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
