A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
